Synopsis
Giuseppe Caputo considers returning to his home village after 40 years of living in Germany to enjoy retirement. He is torn between the desire to return, aware that everything has changed: himself, Germany, Sicily. A former addict, he lives his life in redemption in the company of his black cat, Bianca, his only reason for living. He resides above the restaurant where he works at a breakneck pace as a handyman, although he proudly claims to be a barber. Distressed by the dilemma, he visits an uncle who is leaving for Italy, someone who helped him in the early days and whose hair he habitually cuts. Thus begins a journey, both interior and geographic, to his relative's home through places intertwined with his life in Germany. An industrial, post-modern Germany. Large hydraulic structures that regulate the flow of merchant ships and Mannheim's railway junctions connect him with his inner dimension as a man-individual pawn in the gears of a society still anchored in productivity and social segregation. Giuseppe takes on the tones of a lonely Don Quixote, and the great structures become the "monsters" that accompanied him in his long German life.
"Der Umsteiger" (literal translation: the one who gets off and changes, the passenger in transit) serves as a visual object for reflection and analysis on the migratory flows that have shifted from Italy to northern Europe. It aims to investigate the individual's state of mind and his choices in relation to the mechanisms that regulate the structures of society, in a confrontation between two cultures, the Italian and the German, far apart and distant. Against the backdrop of a remote industrial and post-Nazi Germany, Giuseppe plans to return, or perhaps to leave again...
Sinossi
Giuseppe Caputo valuta dopo 40 anni di vita in Germania, di tornare al paese d’origine a godersi la pensione. È scisso tra il desiderio del rientro consapevole che tutto e cambiato: lui, la Germania, la Sicilia. Ex-tossico dipendente vive la sua vita in redenzione in compagnia del suo gatto nero, Bianca, la sua unica ragione di vita. Abita sopra il ristorante in cui lavora a ritmi forsennati come tuttofare, anche se afferma con orgoglio di esser un barbiere. Angustiato dalla sofferenza per questo dilemma, va a far visita ad un suo zio in partenza per l'Italia, che lo ha aiutato nei primi tempi e a cui abitualmente taglia i capelli. Comincia cosi un viaggio, sia interiore che geografico verso casa del parente attraverso i luoghi che si intrecciano con la sua Germania. Una Germania industriale, post moderna. Grandi strutture idrauliche che regolano il flusso delle navi mercantili, i nodi ferroviari di Mannheim lo mettono in relazione con la sua dimensione interiore, come uomo-individuo pedina degli ingranaggi di una società ancora ancorata alla produttività a segregazione sociale. Giuseppe assume i toni di un don Chisciotte solitario e le grandi strutture i “mostri” che lo hanno affiancato nella sua lunga vita tedesca.
“Der Umsteiger” (traduzione letterale: colui che scende e cambia, il passeggero in transito) si pone come oggetto visuale di riflessione e analisi sui flussi migratori che dall’Italia si sono rivolti al nord Europa. Vuole indagare lo stato d’animo dell’individuo e le sue scelte in relazione ai meccanismi che regolano le strutture della società in un confronto tra due culture, quella italiana e quella tedesca, molto lontane e distanti.
